Course Overview:
This course describes the clinical features of varicella, the vaccine, dosage, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to pediatric/adult varicella immunization.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- Describe varicella illness, including how it is spread and diagnosed.
- Describe varicella and zoster vaccine, including type, how made, and effectiveness.
- Determine who routinely should be given varicella vaccine.
- Correctly use varicella vaccine and immune globulin for postexposure varicella prophylaxis.
- Screen people for contraindications and precautions before varicella vaccination.
- Use the varicella or zoster Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for client teaching before giving the vaccine.
- Correctly administer varicella vaccine using the usual recommended dose, schedule, route, and injection site for a child, adolescent, or adult.
- Identify possible adverse reactions to varicella vaccine and provide appropriate management or treatment.
- Determine who routinely should be given zoster vaccine.
- Screen people for contraindications and precautions before zoster vaccination.
- Correctly administer zoster vaccine using the usual recommended dose, schedule, route, and injection site for an adult.
- Identify possible adverse reactions to zoster vaccine and provide appropriate management or treatment.
Target Audience:
The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
