Course Overview:

This course describes the clinical features of typhoid fever, the vaccines, dosages, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to pediatric/adult typhoid immunization.

Course Objectives:

After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss typhoid fever illness, including how typhoid fever is spread and diagnosed.
  • Describe available typhoid vaccines, including the types and effectiveness.
  • Determine who should receive typhoid vaccine.
  • Screen people for contraindications and precautions before typhoid vaccination.
  • Use the typhoid Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for client teaching before giving the vaccine.
  • Correctly administer each type of typhoid vaccine using the usual recommended schedule, dose, route, and site for a child, adolescent, or adult.
  • Determine when revaccination with typhoid vaccine is needed.
  • Identify potential adverse reactions to typhoid vaccine and provide appropriate management or treatment.

Target Audience:

The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
