Course Overview:

This course describes the clinical features of diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, the vaccines, dosages, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications to use of both diphtheria and tetanus vaccine, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to diphtheria and tetanus pediatric/adult immunization.

Course Objectives:

After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss diseases caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae (diphtheria), Clostridium tetani (tetanus), and Bordetella pertussis (pertussis) and how each is spread.
  • Discuss vaccines used to prevent diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, including vaccine types, how they are made, and effectiveness.
  • Determine who routinely should receive DTaP, DT, Td, Tdap, or single-antigen tetanus toxoid.
  • Correctly use Td, TIG, and IVIG in wound management.
  • Screen people for contraindications and precautions before Td/Tdap/DTaP vaccination.
  • Use the DTaP, Td, and Tdap Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for client teaching before giving the vaccine.
  • Correctly administer DTaP, Td, and Tdap using the usual recommended dose, route, injection site, and schedule for a child, adolescent, or adult.
  • Identify possible adverse reactions to DTaP, Td, and Tdap and provide appropriate management or treatment.

Target Audience:

The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
