Course Overview:
This course describes smallpox vaccine, vaccine efficacy, precautions and contraindications, and vaccine administration decision making in pre-outbreak and outbreak situations. The course also discusses teaching points for vaccine recipient education (including use of the smallpox VIS), post-vaccination care of healthcare workers, and the role of vaccine administration personnel in bioterrorism preparedness and response.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- Discuss smallpox vaccine, including its type, effectiveness, components, and source.
- Properly store, handle, and reconstitute smallpox vaccine.
- Determine who should receive smallpox vaccine routinely, pre-outbreak, or in an outbreak scenario.
- When presented with a possible precaution or contraindication in a recipient, determine whether that recipient should be given smallpox vaccine in a routine or pre-outbreak scenario.
- Provide smallpox vaccine recipient education, including how to access up-to-date recipient education materials.
- Make appropriate decisions regarding administration of smallpox vaccine simultaneously with other vaccines.
- Discuss postvaccination care of healthcare workers.
- Explain the role of vaccine administration personnel in bioterrorism preparedness and response.
Target Audience:
The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
