Course Overview:
This course describes the clinical features of smallpox, its history, and its potential for use as a weapon of bioterrorism. The course includes sections on transmission; diagnosis; tracing and monitoring; the variant types of smallpox; medical management, including post-exposure therapy and supportive care; common complications; isolation techniques; and the basics of outbreak management.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- Discuss smallpox, including virus that causes it, modes of transmission, variants, and diagnosis.
- Discus historical trends in smallpox prevalence, its importance in force protection, and how it could be used for bioterrorism.
- Identify smallpox "contacts," inclduing how to trace and monitor them.
- Explain procedures for collection of specimens for diagnostic purposes.
- Discuss the course and clinical features of smallpox, including typical incubation period, prodrome, and rash.
- Describe medical management of smallpox, including postexposure therapy and supportive care.
- Identify common complications of smallpox and appropriate medical management.
- Explain how isolation is used to avoid exposure to a person infected with smallpox in a healthcare facility.
- Explain the basics of outbreak management in healthcare facilities, homes, and communities.
Target Audience:
The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
