Course Overview:
This course discusses smallpox vaccine administration procedures, vaccination site care and infection control measures, and protocols for revaccination. The course also includes a discussion of adverse events and their management and documentation, and a section about requirements related to investigational new drug protocols.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- Correctly administer smallpox vaccine.
- Teach vaccine recipients how to care for the vaccination site.
- Implement infection control measures that decrease the risk of inadvertent inoculation.
- Evaluate the vaccination site for take.
- Determine which people require revaccination.
- Recognize possible adverse events following smallpox vaccination.
- Manage adverse events using vaccine immune globulin (VIG).
- Document smallpox vaccine administration and adverse events.
- Monitor, manage, and report vaccine use and supplies.
Target Audience:
The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
