Course Overview:
This course describes the clinical features of poliomyelitis, the vaccine, dosage, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to pediatric/adult poliomyelitis immunization.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the disease caused by poliovirus, including how poliovirus is spread.
- Describe polio vaccine, including its type, how made, and effectiveness.
- Determine who routinely should be given polio vaccine and why they need the vaccine.
- Screen people for contraindication and precautions before polio vaccine is given.
- Use the polio Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for client teaching before giving the vaccine.
- Correctly administer polio vaccine using the usual recommended dose, route, and injection site for a child, adolescent, or adult.
- Identify possible adverse reactions to polio vaccine and provide appropriate management or treatment.
Target Audience:
The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
