Course Overview:

This course describes the clinical features of diseases caused by meningococcal bacteria, the vaccines, dosage, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to pediatric/adult meningococcal immunization.

Course Objectives:

After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe diseases caused by meningococcal bacteria (Neisseria meningitidis), including how spread and treatment.
  • Differentiate between both meningococcal vaccines, including type, how made, and effectiveness.
  • Determine who routinely should be given the meningococcal vaccine and which vaccine should be given.
  • Screen people for contraindications and precautions before administration of meningococcal vaccination.
  • Use the meningococcal Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for client teaching before giving the vaccine.
  • Correctly administer each type of meningococcal vaccine, using the usual recommended dose, route, and injection site for a child, adolescent, or adult.
  • Identify possible adverse reactions to meningococcal vaccine and provide appropriate management or treatment.

Target Audience:

The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
