Course Overview:
This course describes the clinical features of measles, the vaccines, dosage, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to pediatric/adult measles immunization.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- Describe measles illness, including how it is spread and diagnosed.
- Differentiate between suspected, probable, and confirmed cases of measles.
- Describe measles vaccine, including its type, how it is made, and effectiveness.
- Determine who routinely should be given measles vaccine and why they need the vaccine.
- Determine when measles vaccine and immune globulin (IG) are appropriate for postexposure measles prophylaxis.
- Screen people for contraindications and precautions before measles vaccination.
- Use the measles (MMR) Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for client teaching before giving the vaccine.
- Correctly administer measles vaccine using the usual recommended dose, schedule, route, and injection site for a child, adolescent, or adult.
- Identify possible adverse reactions to measles vaccine and provide appropriate management or treatment.
Target Audience:
The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
