Course Overview:

This course introduces vaccines and vaccine concepts, including active and passive immunity; the types of vaccines and how they are made; indications and general rules for administering vaccines; valid and invalid contradictions; screening; and the main types of adverse reactions.

Course Objectives:

After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Differentiate between active and passive immunity as it relates to vaccination.
  • Differentiate between live and inactivated vaccines.
  • Apply general rules for vaccination related to timing and spacing of vaccines including antibody: vaccine interactions, simultaneous and non-simultaneous administration of different vaccines, minimum and maximum intervals between doses of the same vaccine, and number of doses.
  • Determine which vaccines are needed by different people.
  • Screen people for valid and invalid contraindications and precautions for vaccination.
  • Communicate the benefits and risks of vaccination through various methods.
  • Identify the main types of adverse reactions and appropriate management of these reactions.

Target Audience:

The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
