Course Overview:
This course describes the clinical features of influenza, the vaccines, dosages, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications to both inactivated and live attenuated influenza vaccine, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to influenza pediatric/adult immunization.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- Describe influenza disease and how it is spread.
- Describe the two different influenza vaccines, including type, how made, and effectiveness.
- Determine who routinely should be given influenza vaccine and why they need the vaccine.
- Screen people for contraindicaitons and precautions before influenza vaccination.
- Use the influenza Vaccine Information Statements (VIS) for client teaching before giving either type of influenza vaccine.
- Correctly administer influenza vaccine using the usual recommended dose, schedule, route, route, and site for giving each type and age group.
- Identify possible adverse reactions to influenza vaccine and provide or arrange for appropriate treatment.
Target Audience:
The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
