Course Overview:

This course describes the clinical features of human papillomavirus, the vaccine, dosage, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to human papillomavirus.

Course Objectives:

After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe diseases caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), including how HPV is spread.
  • Describe HPV vaccine, including its type, how it is made, and its effectiveness at preventing HPV diseases.
  • Determine who routinely should be given HPV vaccine.
  • Screen people for contraindications and precautions before administering HPV vaccine.
  • Use the HPV Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for client teaching before giving the vaccine.
  • Correctly administer HPV vaccine using the usual recommended dose, route, injection site, and schedule.
  • Identify possible adverse reactions to HPV vaccine and provide appropriate management or treatment.

Target Audience:

The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
