Course Overview:
This course describes the clinical features of hepatitis B, the vaccine, dosage, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to hepatitis B pediatric/adult immunization. The course describes people for whom post-vaccination serologic testing is recommended, the management of hepatitis B vaccine nonresponders, and the use of hepatitis B immune globulin and hepatitis B vaccine in post-exposure prophylaxis.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- Describe hepatitis B disease and how it is spread.
- Differentiate between the five serologic tests used for definitive diagnosis of hepatitis B.
- Describe hepatitis B vaccine, including its type, how it is made, and effectiveness.
- Determine who routinely should be given hepatitis B vaccine and why they need the vaccine.
- Screen people for contraindications and precautions before hepatitis B vaccination.
- Determine for whom prevaccination serologic testing is recommended.
- Use the hepatitis B Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for client teaching before giving the vaccine.
- Correctly administer hepatitis B vaccine using the usual recommended dose, route, injection site, and schedule for a child, adolescent, or adult.
- Identify possible adverse reactions to hepatitis B vaccine and provide appropriate management or treatment.
- Differentiate for whom postvaccination serologic testing is recommended.
- Determine appropriate management of hepatitis B vaccine nonresponders.
- Appropriately use of hepatitis B immune globulin and hepatitis B vaccine in postexposure prophylaxis.
Target Audience:
The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
