Course Overview:

This course describes the clinical features of hepatitis A, the vaccine, dosage, and administration details when applicable, and lists the recommended indications for vaccine administration. The course discusses valid precautions and contraindications, the use of the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS), and available resources related to hepatitis A pediatric/adult immunization.

Course Objectives:

After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe hepatitis A virus and infection, how it is spread, and how it can be prevented.
  • Describe the use of immune globulin (IG) in preventing hepatitis A, including efficacy and contraindications.
  • Describe hepatitis A vaccine, including its type, how it is made, and effectiveness.
  • Determine who should be given hepatitis A vaccine and why they need the vaccine.
  • Screen people for contraindications and precautions before hepatitis A vaccination.
  • Use the hepatitis A Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for client teaching before giving the vaccine.
  • Correctly administer hepatitis A vaccine using the usual recommended doses, route, injection sites, and schedules for children, adolescents, and adults.
  • Identify common adverse reactions and possible rare adverse reactions that may occur with hepatitis A vaccine and provide or arrange for appropriate treatment.

Target Audience:

The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
