Course Overview:
This course discusses botulism, including the different forms, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. It discusses the use of botulinum antitoxin and botulinum toxoid. The course also provides numerous resources related to these topics.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- Discuss the bacteria and toxin that cause botulism, including transmission and the three forms of the botulism.
- Discuss the potential for use of botulinum toxin as a bioweapon.
- Discuss botulinum antitoxin and toxoid, including effectiveness.
- Determine who should receive botulinum antitoxin or toxoid.
- Screen people for contraindications and precautions before giving botulinum antitoxin or toxoid.
- Provide client teaching before giving botulinum antitoxin or toxoid.
- Correctly administer botulinum antitoxin using the usual recommended dose, route, and injection site for giving botulinum antitoxin.
- State the usual recommended dose, route, and injection site for giving botulinum toxoid if it should be needed to protect against botulism.
- Identify possible adverse reactions to botulinum antitoxin and botulinum toxoid.
Target Audience:
The intended audience for this training is: physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, pharmacists, medical assistants, and other paraprofessionals who either give immunizations or set immunization policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs; private and public providers, including programs that prepare pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.
