About Project Immune Readiness Web-based Courseware

The idea for Project Immune Readiness grew out of the experiences of the Allergy-Immunology Department and the Triservice Immunization-Allergy Specialist Course supported since 1976 by Walter Reed Army Medical Center Command. The need for standardized resources to perform quality immunization services in the 21st century became evident in the 1990's.

The Armed Forces Epidemiological Board (AFEB), civilian scientific advisors to the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs), sponsored a review of "Vaccines in the Military" in 1999. In that report, the AFEB recommended that DoD develop educational resources to support immunization services. Project Immune Readiness is one outcome of those recommendations.

In effort to provide wide-spread vaccine education, many of the vaccine courses used by the DoD have been made available to civilians through this website. This website is not funded or supported by the VHC Network or the United States government, but it is made available to civilians as a public service with permission from the VHC Network.

Additional resources provided through the CDC National Immunization Program, the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, and the National Vaccine Advisory Committee include the following:

Target Audience
Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, DoD paraprofessionals, pharmacists, and their colleagues who either give immunizations or set policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs. Military, private and public healthcare providers, including pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.

Commitment to Standards of Quality and to Excellence
There is growing national recognition that clinical-immunization core knowledge is complex and that training is required on an ongoing basis. Having a standardized, peer-reviewed system to facilitate learning and to evaluate that learning process is the goal of Project Immune Readiness.

Future Needs and Development Vision
Partnerships to assess the value of the material within Project Immune Readiness are encouraged. If any DoD, Public Health Service, or academic stakeholders are interested in developing grant applications for evaluation or expansion of material in this Project, please contact the Vaccine Healthcare Center at 202-782-0411 or via email ProjectImmuneReadiness@na.amedd.army.mil.

Walter Reed's Triservice Immunization-Allergy Specialist Course is evolving to support a "train the trainer" curriculum so that graduates can be employed by medical treatment facilities to develop local competency-assessment programs. Partnerships for this effort are encouraged. Please contact the Vaccine Healthcare Center to explore this effort.
